From: Mark Westwood on 7 May 2008 05:30 Hi I've just tried installing R2008a on Windows XP wSP2 on a) A new laptop with no existing installation; and a) A desktop with an installation of R2007b. In both cases the installation seems to have fouled up the computer, knocking out network connectivity and crippling the Cygwin installation on (b). Has anyone else experienced a similar problem ? Don't worry, I don't expect anyone reading this either to fully diagnose the problem (and I know I haven't told you nearly enough about the platforms for a full diagnosis) or to fix it (I've managed to do that), I'm just interested in learning whether anyone else has had similar experiences. Regards Mark Westwood

I haven't heard any reports of that type of behavior and obviously, that type of behavior shouldn't happen. I recommend that you contact our Technical Support staff and describe exactly what you mean when you say "fouled up the computer" -- does it no longer boot? Does it boot but crash with a blue screen? Does it start up normally but crash when you start MATLAB? etc. You can contact Technical Support using the link on this page: http://www.mathworks.com/company/aboutus/contact_us/ -- Steve Lord slord(a)mathworks.com
From: Gabe Spradlin on 7 May 2008 10:09 I haven't had your issue but I've had another one. I'm currently running 2007b and I've tried to install 2008a twice on my primary windows XP pro (SP2) PC. Both times the install completes without error. However, when I attempt to start 2008a I get the following error: The instruction at "0x781457bd" referenced memory at "...". The memory could not be "read". Then I'm give the option to terminate or debug the program. I got this error after the first installation. So I rebooted and tried starting MATLAB again. Same result. So I've uninstalled 2008a and reinstalled. Same result. Other people in my company have had license issues that were corrected by copying the license file to a different directory. However, this doesn't appear to be a license issue. I've installed 2008a on another machine without any issue. The 2 machines are nearly identical.
