A Face in the Crowd, http://imdb.com/title/tt0050371/ has a very intimate
portrayal of a small town radio station, complete with a vivacious Patricia
Neal hauling a bulky tape recorder into a jail. The ease with which she
carries it causes suspicion that the guts were removed.

The story moves to New York, where the main character, played by Andy
Griffith, becomes a stunning hypocrite. For those of you familiar with
Griffith's TV acting, this performance is one of the most powerful of any
actor, rising to Shakespearean tempestuosity. The script's view of the TV
world of 1957 is utterly scathing, anticipating a later movie, Network, by
many years.

I had never been interested in the work of Elia Kazan, because Kazan
disgraced himself by selling out to the HUAC, "naming names." I now see that
he was, nevertheless, a great director.
