In CCC's preferences you had checked 'create disk image' and 'prepare
for ASR' (or some such thing). Erase the drive, clone again, this time
uncheck 'create disk image' and check 'make bootable.'

You have created a disk image of a bootable disk; not a bootable disk.
Theere is no way you'll ever boot from that drive until you clone a
bootable system onto that _drive_.

I believe the mistake you made was checking the "Create a disk
image on target" option in CCC preferences. You don't want a
disk image file on the external drive, you want the cloned files
put directly on the external volume. Run CCC again with that
option disabled (remove the "Macintosh HD.sparseimage" file
first), and you should end up with a bootable volume.

That is what I've done.
