From: Al on 25 Dec 2005 10:53 I have a new used blue G3 which is a dual boot 9.2.2 and OSX. I recently loaded some software the the icons are messed up, they are the default little blanks. My son said to rebuild the desktop. However I hesitate to do this. Why? Because I rebuilt the desktop on my G4 dual boot apple about a year ago and it really screwed it up. I lost all my comments and had to "reconnect" all of my files to their apps. Now when I did that, I was logged into 9.2.2. Should I rebuild the desktop from within OSX? Can you rebuild the desktop within OSX or is there something else that happens? Al

Mac OS X uses a different mechanism for storing desktop comments. -- Tom Stiller PGP fingerprint = 5108 DDB2 9761 EDE5 E7E3 7BDA 71ED 6496 99C0 C7CF

You can indeed rebuild _Classic's_ Desktop from within OS X (System Preferences --> Classic). However, OS X itself doesn't use a Desktop file. -- /Jon For mail address, run the following in Terminal: echo 36199371860304980107073482417748002696458P|dc Skype: storhaugen _________________________________________ Usenet Zone Free Binaries Usenet Server More than 140,000 groups Unlimited download http://www.usenetzone.com to open account
From: Derek Currie on 27 Dec 2005 10:25 What you want it to rebuild in MOS 9.2.2 using TechTool Lite, the last version of which is 3.0.4. Among the many things it does is: 1) Backup your comments, and restore them after the rebuild. 2) Completely delete your desktop database so that a clean, uncorrupted database can be created. (It is fairly common for the desktop database to corrupt, a problem that is not solved by a rebuild. Your 'reconnect' problem sounds like DB corruption). <http://www.micromat.com/tt_lite/tt_lite.html> Be sure to check out the other features it offers. It creates a text file backup containing all the comments in a disk's desktop file, and can add them to a newly created desktop file. -- Nullibicity http://www.nullibicity.com/
