Hi there! I'm a linux rookie looking for some advice. So far I've
tried Kubuntu, Sabayon & Knopixx, just for fun.

I really liked the graphical desktop of Sabayon (Beryl). I downloaded
Kubunutu (7.1 i think) expecting it to have something similar to Beryl
built in (Compiz Fusion) but I was sadly disappointed when it's
default was just plain old KDE 3.5 with no fancy graphics.....

Questions:

1) Which version of linux should I try next? (I want a snazzy beryl-
style desktop, I dont really like KDE, and it should be friendly to
linux rookies)

2) Did I download the wrong version of ubuntu? Do I need to install/
activate compiz or does it come 'turned on'?

Thanks!

Well if I am not mistaken, Beryl merged with Compiz is known as Compiz
Fusion ( all of them Window Managers not Desktop Managers ).

I'm not sure how you go about activating Compiz in Kubuntu ( since I
use Gentoo ) but I am sure a web search or a visit to the Kubuntu
forum might solve that problem.

Cheers

with opensuse compiz-fusion is a one click install in my view opensuse is
the most user friendly. but saying that sabayon was an easy one to install
it just did not have the apps.

try

*Puppy Linux* (live cd installable if you want)

after this, you will stop looking for another distro

there is a guide for setting up those 3D desktop stuff under Ubuntu.
Just google them.

OTOH, I think it's waste of time. I am perfectly happy with
a flat if not text-only desktop. No drag-and-drop? No big deal,
really. :)
