This is probably true for an old collection that wasn't taken care of and was probably played on a mediocre turntable when it was played. The original poster needs to think about whether he just wants to move his collection essentially as-is to another medium or if he wants to restore it to its original glory. > No, here's what you do. I recommend thrift store or yard sale stereo receivers in the 10-20 year old range. Keep the records. There's really no satisfactory way of digitizing the jackets, which are the best part of a lot of records. <g> -- If you e-mail me and it bounces, use your secret decoder ring and reach me here: double-m-eleven-double-zero at yahoo -- I'm really Mike Rivers (mriv...(a)d-and-d.com)

And then you're going to need a computer to read it? Sheesh! Makes it too hard to enjoy the "record experience." I'd probably rather watch American Idol. <g> -- If you e-mail me and it bounces, use your secret decoder ring and reach me here: double-m-eleven-double-zero at yahoo -- I'm really Mike Rivers (mriv...(a)d-and-d.com)

You can do better, but it's a good entry level unit. And it sure won't ruin your records the way the cheap USB things will. In fact, the Music Hall table I had mentioned is being sold by Needle Doctor as well, but they want a hundred dollars more for it: http://www.needledoctor.com/Music-Hall-MMF-2-2-Turntable?sc=7&category=960 It's in the same basic league as the Rega P1. >You can get a phono preamp for ~60 on ebay > >http://cgi.ebay.com/TCC-TC-754-Phono-Preamp-w-3-AUX-Inputs-BLACK-VERSION_W0QQitemZ160235266644QQihZ006QQcategoryZ48648QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I am amazed at the variation between preamps... actually testing them, it is shocking how many of them don't actually match the RIAA curve. And that isn't just the cheapies either. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis."
