I am dealing with Red Hat again after a really long break (last time
was in 2001). So I wonder what are the best repositories for a 64-bit
machine running RHEL 4 WS.

Thanks, actually they are lacking quite a few useful things.

What I did find useful - and very well compatible, too - was the
CentOS repositories:
