I have now tested Redo Backup & Recovery and the claim is right,
the new version is much faster then before.
It did the backup in around 880 Mb/sec and
the size of the backup was 10.4 Gb large (11 files).

I then tested the new build of Clonezilla (1.2.5-38).
It did the backup (beginner mode) in around 1250 Mb/sec
and the size of the backup was 10.4 Gb large (18 files).

I tested it on a
95Gb large harddrive with Ubuntu 10.04 and swap on it
around 16 Gb data on the drive.

I'll have to try it again. The painfully slow speed was one of my major
issues with Redo.I compared a backup with Redo to a backup using the
partclone utility on Parted Magic.Redo took about six times longer,36 min
vs. 6 min. We'll see how the new version works.

I also tested the recovery bootcd for
"Paragon Backup & Recovery 10.2 Free Edition" on the same harddrive.
It did the backup (normal compression) in around 28 min
(I would guess around 700 Mb/sec)
and the size of the backup was 11.4 Gb (10 files)

In the features pages the first paragraph report ' insert the CD or USB
stick into your PC and reboot.'
Does the computer need to have the bios configured to include 'boot from
USB stick or is there an auto run ?
I'm interpreting this utility to be a back up(restore) of the operating
system only (not an imaging style)

'Redo Backup and Recovery is an extremely easy point-and-click backup
system on a live rescue CD. It stores an image of the entire hard drive
to make recovery from viruses, malware, or disc failures fast.'

This report answers my question.
