I am using Windows XP SP2 - Outlook Express 6.0
Recently when closing OE a message box flashed on the screen which said it
was compacting. Then it showed a message which said sending. Both flashed
very quickly, almost too quick to read. Afterwards OE closed. Wondering
what was happening I reopened OE and everything in my Inbox was gone. Does
anyone know what happened to my messages and how I can retrieve them. Why
did they get compacted? I don't even know what that means? I've been using
OE for a long time, but never had this happen before. Neither has anyone I've
talked with about it. Any help will be appreciated.

God Bless.

In WinXP SP2, Windows will prompt you to compact all OE folders every 100
times you close OE. If you decline to do so, Windows will do it for you.
Are you running WinXP SP2?

Compacting doesn't move or delete messages. What you found is apparently
your OE identity's store folder
(http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/store.htm). If (all) messages are
missing in your OE folders, your identity was being mismanaged and
compacting was long overdue, all of which led to a damaged store. See
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx
and below for tips on avoiding this in future.

OEX (OE Enhancement Program)

For lost Inbox messages:
Inbox.dbx is damaged. Close OE and then Move Inbox.dbx from your store
folder to another Windows (not OE) folder and run any of the above
applications on the moved file. (A new, empty Inbox.dbx will be created
when you next open OE.)

Other folders:
Close OE. Move the associated DBX file to another Windows folder and run
any of the above applications on the moved file.

If one of the above applications successfully recovers any messages, count
yourself fortunate. Do not import the moved DBX file back into OE!
Recovered messages may be dragged into an open OE folder, but...

Avoid Such Corruption in Future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

You forgot the kitchen sink. <G>

This compaction problem is getting to be more and more of an issue with no
resolution.
