I have installed a SATA Philips DVD writer, but there was no connector
for sound, so on DVD playback there is no sound.
On IDE Units there is the usual connector.
How can I get sound on play back?

right click my computer/ select
properties/hardware/devicemanager/dvd-cdrom drives/your
drive/properties/properties/ check enable digital sound

EB,
If there is no sound connector on the drive, then you will need to play
music/video through a multimedia player that is on your PC to get sound,
such as the DVD player software that came with you unit, MS Media Player,
QuickTime, etc...

The audio connector is no longer needed (See Pen's post). Additionally, if
you don't have a software DVD player installed, you might see the DVD
attempt to play in WinMediaPlayer but with no sound due to missing codecs.

If you don't have a software DVD player/program, you need to locate one.
Someone here probably knows of a freebie somewhere.

Maybe not. Why do something the complicated way when an easy and proven
method will suffice?

I'll bet there was one in the box with the drive, unless maybe it was an OEM
version. If not, VideoLAN works well.
