The default Search Web Page Template in Front Page returns links for htm or
html documents in my web. What I need to do is return pdf's and Word Docs.
How can I accomplish that?

The simple WAIS search engine that FP uses isn't really capable of scanning
inside of PDFs and Word documents. That is actually far more complex because
those aren't plain text documents like web pages are. You'll need to go up
to a more robust solution. There are some out there that are free, such as
Microsoft's Indexing Services, but hosts usually charge a bit more for these
features and it takes a bit of programming to work with them.

Find out what server-side programming technologies your host supports and
that will give you a starting point to look for existing scripts or
applications that you can use in your site to get this additional
functionality.

You need to be hosted on Windows IIS web server with Index Server installed and running for your
site and your host must have installed the Index Server PDF add-in form Adobe for indexing PDF
files.

I am hosted on a Windows IIS web server and the Index Server is installed
with the PDF add-in form for Adobe. What are my next steps?

Via Index Server MMC, create a index catalog for the site. For additional help, suggest you post to
the IIS and/or Index Server newsgroups
