Problems with udev
Hi I'm running Slackware 12.0, kernel 2.6.21.5. I have a dvd and a cd drive. My problem is that the link /dev/cdrom intermittently points to /dev/hdd, i.e.: %~$ ls -l /dev/cdrom lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-01-08 07:13 /dev/cdrom -> hdd rather than /dev/hdc. This is after I created the file: ... 15 Jan 2008 08:15
Booting from USB
I'm trying to set up one of my USB fobs for booting. I have two - a 512MB Apacer "HandySteno" and a 4GB no-name "USB Flash Disk" (an "eBuyer Extra Value" item, in case anyone from the UK is reading). I thought I might have problems with the 4GB one, because I've read something about USB devices only being able... 9 Jan 2008 05:46
Promiscuous BOOTP server?
Hi All, I'm trying to set up a BOOTP/tftpd server so that I can boot diskless machines on my LAN. I've read the dhcpd docs, and it seems that dhcpd requires the MAC address of every machine to which it will serve the files via tftp. The original bootpd (ie. via inetd, without dhcpd) also seems to require MAC... 12 Jan 2008 03:50

Can't boot Fedora Release 8
I currently have Fedora Release 8 installed on my laptop with no problem. I installed Fedora Release 8 on my son's desktop computer. Install went fine (though I had to use text mode install because he only has 256 MB of RAM). After install, if I try to boot into X11 mode (runlevel = 5) or run startx, the monitor ... 9 Jan 2008 23:48

Has anyone gotten RealPlayer to work with Fedora 8?
I have had no problems getting RealPlayer to work with all past versions of RedHat and Fedora. However, with Fedora 8 and RealPlayer 10, I am just getting a segmentation fault when I try to run realplay. If anyone has succeeded with this combination, please let me know how you did it. Thanks in advance, Ed ... 7 Jan 2008 17:56
Advanced LILO question: found the problem but not the solution
I think I've figured it out. The weakness is in the directive that tells the system where to find the bootloader: install = /mnt/tmp/boot/boot.b This directive tells LILO where to find the boot loader, but doesn't allow you to tell LILO which disk to look on. LILO is forced to assume that the loader is on t... 7 Jan 2008 20:44
