From: Betamax_man on 29 Nov 2005 16:47 First of all, let me appologise if this has been asked before. I am new to Linux and have a problem with the monitor settings. Walking across my screen is a blue box that has: Signal Out of Range Set Monitor to: 1024x768 60Hz My system consists of the following: ASUS A8V mainboard AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Abit 128Mb ATI 5960 graphics card Hauppauge WinTV PVR 350 TV card 80Gb Maxtor serial ATA hard drive 250Gb Maxtor IDE hard drive 80Gb Western Digital IDE hard drive NEC DVD-R/W+R/W-DL 1Gb DDR 400 memory (think I could do with some of that in my head) Medion 15" LCD monitor and last but not least SuSE 10.0 Have tried running SaX2 in the text console and changing monitor type to -->LCD and selecting the correct settings, but SuSE likes to re-set the settings to either 63Hz or 58Hz Do I dump SuSE 10.0 and use another distro, or can someone help. I do want to get away from M$ Windows. Many thanks, Betamax_man. -- Betamax_man

In my case the message appears during the quite lengthy boot sequence - but shows that it is the scan rate that is wrong - 85 Hz vertical with a TFT max of 60 - 75??. (A horizontal rate is also mentioned but, if I got it right way round, that isn't the same problem with TFT.) Perhaps you are suffering from the same problem, with the system booting at a higher late than the recommended 60 Hz for TFT and nothing to do with the resolution. As soon as the boot sequence on my system reaches KDE all is well until shutting down, when the same thing happens. So far I haven't investigated very far - too new to Linux, really , to do much anyway - yet. -- Duncan K Downtown Dalgety Bay

From: jamesrome@gmail.com on 29 Nov 2005 19:08 I had similar problems with a Dell 1600x1200 LCD Monitor. Sax kept setting it to XGA. But eventually, for some reason, it finally took. You should also try manually editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf to be sure it has your desired modes in it.

Fortunately, there are OTHER video configuration utilities included with your system. First, on most GNU/Linux systems, the location of the configuration file will be /etc/X11 Next, most of the configuration utilities, as well as most of X's utilities in general are located in /usr/X11R6/bin There exists a symlink between the above two mentioned directories. SuSE is currently defaulting to use Xorg Unix windowing system, as opposed to the previously used XFree86 system. Xorg includes two (2) configuration utilities: GUI-based xorgcfg and Text-based xorgconfig I would attempt first to use the GUI based tool. If that failed for any reason, I would then resort to the Text-based tool. The final destination for the config file generated by either needs to be /etc/X11 You can switch between the different consoles by using either Ctrl-Alt-Fnumber1~7 or Alt-Fnumber1~7 If you use the GUI-based config tool, and your screen locks up on you, you can usually kill an X session with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. If you use the GUI-based tool, and your screen locks up on you, you can switch consoles, and usually kill the Xserver, or issue a reboot command. If you switch consoles, and CAN'T see the screen because of video artifacts (garbage) remember that you must first LOG INTO that console before you have access to it. First it asks for user name, and then asks for password. THEN you can use the console. The command for issuing a reboot is quite remarkably reboot If you're logged into the console, but can't see anything, the reboot command, when accepted into the system will be heard with two beeps of the system bell. Learn to use your X tools!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My suse 9.2 system on a 15" flat panel produces this information when I use xquery: These are the data which X tells me it would use FROM THE CONFIG FILE!!! smbserver:/usr/X11R6/bin # xquery -m 0 "1024x768" 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync X reports (via xquery) these sync ranges from the config file: smbserver:/usr/X11R6/bin # xquery -y 0 31.00-48.00 50.00-60.00 X reports (via xquery) that these are the frequencies IN CURRENT USE!!! smbserver:/usr/X11R6/bin # xquery -f 0 48 Khz : 60 Hz > Do I dump SuSE 10.0 and use another distro, or can someone help.
