From: Steve on 20 Oct 2007 14:26 Hello, I recently purchased a new V750 to scan my 4x5 film. It came with SilverFast, which I was looking forward to using. I have not had any luck getting a good scan off my 4x5 Fuji NPS 160 film. I have used vuescan, but have heard much about SilverFast. Are there any tips/workflows that help me "fill out all the options". I can scan in 1 neg at 3200 dpi with Digital Ice enabled and it take 1 or 2 hours to perform the scan. This is on a Pentium 4, 3.4 gigahertz with 4 gig ram, 2 terabytes storage, (Pentium extreme (4 processor)). If I have two negative in the holder, it sometimes doesn't do the scan the same, and it has two versions of the filename (two different menus) and warns about overwriting. This is most confusion. I reduced the resolution of the scan to debug the process, and it still takes over an hour. I may have to go back to Vuescan. That works fine on my Nikon scanner. The prescan color looks fine. But the full scan is off color and much to contrasty. My recent Grand Canyon shots done with the Hasselblad look much better (scanned with the Nikon 8000) with the same file type. Thanks, Steve PS: I downloaded updates. I am running SFE-6.4.4r7(Epson).
From: degrub on 21 Oct 2007 15:27 You might uninstall and reinstall ( delete prefs as well). ANother user had a similar time issue and that cured it. Also, make sure you have no cable issues ( ie the epson software works ok) or competing devices on the port. Most scanners like to be dedicated onto a port. I am wondering if it is something else that creates and unecessarily large file size which is causing it to take so long. ICE will cause the total scan time to increase but it shouldn't normally take as long as you have experienced. I am running SFE-6.4.4r7(Epson). I use an Epson V700, on my 4x5s I don't use DI unless I have to, but a color 3200ppi scan will take 10-15 minutes, never really timed it. I use the Epson software, the pro section is very functional. I easily see grain on my B&Ws at 2400 and 3200 ppi. While I put my Nikon LS2000 away after getting this scanner I have not doubt an LS8000 would be superior for 2 1/4. The V700 comes with SilverFast Light, which I understand is no better than the Epson software. The times I have used DI it generally doubles the time for the scan. Tom
