From: Steve M on 25 Jul 2008 19:07 Just finished soundcheck for Jefferson Starship. Their guitar tech, who reeked of attitude, asked me for a ground lift. I asked, "What for?". He said he wanted to lift the AC on one of Paul Kantner's 'Twins' because it had a hum. I asked him if he didn't like Paul. "Why?" I said, "Because you can electocute someone that way." Then I had to explain it to him. Fuckin noobs.......... -- Steve <snip> McQ

Twins have a polarity switch on the back, do they not? If that doesn't get rid of the hum, it's likely not the amp that's the problem. -Denny

May God save their souls (and bodies). I had a dreadful run-in with a supposed 'guitar tech' last summer. Jeez ! I'm not sure I even want to begin. Attitude ? He had it in spades plus a total ignorammce of seemingly ANY technology. It was a bit like ... tech: "I want you to fix this". me: "Fine that'll involve XYZ". tech :"I don't want you to do it that way and don't try and teach me my job". Graham

I nearly forgot to say that my colleague and I inspected an active guitar DI box he also kept, and yes, the safety earth/ground had been snipped. BY LAW we had to re-instate it. And some other kit was wired in such a way that it guaranteed hum from basic physics. The 'pin one problem'. Effing guitar techs. And he went on to 'diss' everyone involved in trying to solve his problem when it was clearly not that difficult. I wrote the studio manager a 5 page report (free) to explain why only to get booted out ! Probably because their regular tech was equally incompetent. And by then the guitar tech had taken a personal dislike to me for being 'over technical' even though I explained I was only trying to help ! And this is a multi-million pound studio ! Jeez. And never got paid a cent for all that.. It's Knoppfler's studio btw. Graham

Been down this road to incessant argument with musos and so-called techs before. >I wrote the studio manager a 5 page report (free) to explain why >only to get booted out !
