From: Mike the Brewer on 10 Jan 2008 08:43 A couple of weeks ago I posted enquiring about the best platform and how to get into Linux.....thanks all for the good advice and encouragement. I downloaded several distros........to date I have managed to get Ubuntu installed from a demo/install cd version through XP, I am most impressed. However, I would really like to try Mandriva but cannot get the cd to boot, no matter what I try so far. Even though the blurb says it will boot the pc. ( yes I set the bios to boot from cdrom) I unpacked the iso with Winrar and burned to cd, there are some folder contents which are still packaged, do I need to burn the cd after unpacking just the iso as downloaded, or do I need to unpack each sub folder and assemble all the contents to the cd as individual files.......forgetting the folders. In most cases I could not make a boot floppy as most of the files ( such as vmlinuz ) are too big for that. I am not sure which files I need anyway, and would like to either install from cd or from the hard drive. A little help with this would be very much appreciated. Meanwhile I have signed up to my local LUG, so hopefully will get into some meetings and discussions. -- Mike the Brewer Lincoln. "The secret of a good job is in the quality of the swear-words used"

What error messages do you get, if any? You could temporarily disable all boot devices bar the CD to see the messages. Have you tried another burn in case it was a dud? Have you tried another PC? > A little help with this would be very much appreciated. Meanwhile I have > signed up to my local LUG, so hopefully will get into some meetings and > discussions. Were there any options related to making it bootable. FWIW on every Windows machine I use, I install Alex Feinman's ISO burner shell extension. I have successfully burnt many linux CDs and DVDs with that. -- <http://ale.cx/> (AIM:troffasky) (UnSoEsNpEaTm(a)ale.cx) 13:44:27 up 5 days, 4:08, 2 users, load average: 1.74, 1.68, 1.55 2x Broadband/IT/Telecoms support positions in Newcastle city centre. Hi Mike. You should just burn the iso as downloaded. No unpacking. In most cd burning software you will have a option named "burn image" wich, after you choose it, makes you select a file. You select your .iso file and burn the cd. Pedro

You burn the CD image AS IS. .iso files are cd images to be burned directly. -- ______________________________________________________________________________ | spike1(a)freenet.co.uk | | |Andrew Halliwell BSc(hons)| "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't | | in | suck is probably the day they start making | | Computer science | vacuum cleaners" - Ernst Jan Plugge | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
