Thanks, Robert. Unfortunately, since posting my original query, the
portable CD player in question [Memorex MPD8860] seems to have stopped
working completely. (The headphones it came with were garbage to begin
with.) I've bought a different brand [Panasonic SL-SV590] that I hope
will last longer, and actually came with adequate headphones. No "line
out" (or DC in) jacks, though, and a much less informative LCD display.
When I hook the new one up through my car's tape player (with bass
boost off), sound is okay except there's not much high end. I guess my
next steps, if I'm going to put any time into this, would be to listen
to portable CD player with good headphones, and also listen to same
music in car from good quality cassette dub. I'm just glad I'm one of
those people who can get along with something less than highest-fi.

That would be one example - it's really a front-end for rpm itself,
while rpm itself is an amalgamation of file packing, scripting, and
a database tool. urpmi is Mandrake specific as I recall.

Generally when I talk about helper tools, I'm referring to something
meant to act as a front end to a more basic tool. You could take this
back to something like 'adduser' or 'useradd' which started as scripts
to take inputs of username, GECOS name, and maybe a few other optional
parameters, and

1. create the entry in /etc/password (and /etc/shadow if applicable)
2. add a username to /etc/group (and /etc/gshadow if applicable)
3. create a home directory
4. populate the home directory from /etc/skel
5. create the mail directory in /var/spool/mail/
6. change ownership and modes as applicable
7. (optionally0 send the new user a mail welcoming them

One step instead of seven - with a lot more consistency. Typo the
username, and it's the same everywhere, rather than just in a single
file or directory. That actually is a major advantage. At the other
end, you find a helper that asks three or four questions, and creates
a dialout setup, creating the right scripts, with the handful of
options needed (pppd alone has 166 "standard" options, most of which
are never used).)

I'm sure there are thousands of similar stories. You know that who-ever
creates a situation like this never even bothers to think it all the way
through, and often can't see the problem it creates.

Well, you were coming from the east, Connecticut or eastern Westchester
County. Remember that I'm starting pretty much along the Hudson. Back
in '01 a friend and I drove in to NYC. She'd never heard of my route,
but admitted it was surprisingly faster than the route she was used to.

During the day on a weekday, early September '98.

I was at my parents' house on Saturday, and counted six cables
connecting the poles. No streetlights. From the bottom up, thick, 3
medium, 2 thin. Thick (maybe 1" diameter) was telephone, first medium
was cable TV (these two had inline amps or filters or something), next
two mediums and first thin appeared to be electric, top was ground (and
perch for birds).

Oh, okay. Like Mandriva's 'msec' -- one command sets all sorts of
privileges and permissions. (It took me a while to figure out that one,
but I did.)
