From: Colin Henein on 17 Nov 2005 18:45 I've got a mid-side recording with the mid in the left channel and the side in the right channel of an aiff file. I would like to graphic-EQ these two signals separately before running them into a mid-side decoder (mda Image) to produce a stereo image. I am having trouble with this because all the graphic-EQ plugins I can find are essentially mono, and the Image plugin is stereo. I could split the track to get two mono streams, and process those with two eq plugins, but then I don't have a stereo stream to feed to Image anymore. If I don't separate the track into two mono streams then Image is happy but then I can't have separate EQs. It seems like this would be easily solved if there were a graphic EQ plugin that treated the left and right channels of a stereo track with separate controls. I realize that I could split the tracks to separate files, EQ them separately and save them back to separate files, join the two mono files together to make stereo, then into mda Image to get a left-right pair. Doing this requires doing everything sequentially, though, and I'd like to be able to adjust the EQ live as I'm monitoring the left-right result. I am on Mac OS X. I have access to Cubase LE, and a few other secondary type audio tools. Anyone have any suggestions? Regards, Colin p.s. for those keeping score from my last problem: I used the LSD2 with an external pre-amp and then into the Presonus firebox. I am pleased with the results. The pre-amp I used was a Presonus mp-20 which was what was available on rental, but I am looking to buy a RNP in the future. Thank you all for your comments on the gain issues. Now, on to the next problem... processing my mid-side.
From: news-server.columbus.rr.com on 17 Nov 2005 19:19 Sounds like a job for Logic. If you separate them out to two tracks you can probably EQ with an insert effect, then put a separate insert (with the Image or whatever) on the main out channel. i use PCs (some macs) and have never used Logic, but since you can do this in Sonar I imagine logic can as well. Or DP. From: Colin Henein on 17 Nov 2005 23:20 So... here I am answering my own question. The answer is to forget the mda Image plugin, and do my own mid-side decode in Cubase. Now, to recommendations. I'm looking for a half-decent graphic equalizer plugin to remove some room hum and generally even out some of the undesirable characteristics of the room. I do not have a million dollars. Does anyone have any suggestions? Colin p.s. in case it is helpful to others searching someday: I'm splitting the mid-side file into two mono tracks. Then I import the mid side into Cubase. Then I import the side file into Cubase TWICE. Then I invert the phase (menu Audio > Process > Phase Reverse) on one of the side tracks. Punt the side tracks (panned hard L-R) into a new Cubase group track, and voila... the group fader controls my stereo image, and the mid track's center-panned mono fader the mid image.
From: Ricky Hunt on 18 Nov 2005 02:48 Just split the tracks, put an EQ on each one, and send them to a stereo sub/aux channel (panned accordingly) and put your Image plugin on the sub/aux. Does anyone have any suggestions? A graphic is not the tool you want. Doesn't Cubase already have parametric filters built in? >p.s. in case it is helpful to others searching someday: I'm splitting >the mid-side file into two mono tracks. It doesn't matter. You can EQ the M-S file, or the resulting decoded file, and _IF_ the two channels are set the same, the results will be identical. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra.
