Windows USB mass-storage oddity
Okay, I got a digital camera which attaches to my pc via USB. Until recently, whenever I connected it to the PC, it would autoplay a selection of utilities to transfer my images from the camera to my computer. As of a couple of weeks back, it stopped doing any autoplays. I looked into it a bit and it sees the d... 16 Jul 2008 18:13
Can't format FAT16 microSD card
For reasons too long to explain, I formatted my 2GB AData microSD card to FAT16 instead of 32. Shortly after, I found out that that wasn't a good idea, as when I reinserted it into my adapter and into the PC, it wouldn't recognize it anymore. I tried two different readers (one microsd direct reader and a miniSD conve... 31 Jul 2008 21:39
Very poor RAID write performance
I confirm this. I've been running similar tests. With two drives in RAID-1, I get roughly 100MB/s reads and only 20MB/s writes. The motherboard as another raid controller (SATA only) which does ~95/70 MB/s. For Raid-0 (same two drives), I get 195MB/s reads and 185MB/s writes on the SATA controller and only ... 12 Jul 2008 00:19
Best way to test multiple SCSI and SAS hard drives?
Hi, I need to test large quantities of 68 pin and 80 pin SCSI hard drives and SAS hard drives to determine if they are not defective. What would be the best way (economically and efficiently) to test these drives? Background: I currently have 3 boxes running Windows XP with a SCSI and/or SAS controller c... 12 Jul 2008 18:41
Quality eSATA PCI card and cables?
I am currently running three Sonnet 500P eSATA enclosures on a Dell server using a 4-port Addonics eSATA PCI-X card. Everything works very well and has been very reliable. However, recently I had to do some maintenance on some adjacent hardware, and merely brushed against the eSATA cables. Two of the three Sonn... 23 Jul 2008 10:12
Hard drive going offline
I have a drive that has been periodically making a clicking sound (like it's shutting down), but it's temporary--everything seems to be back online when checked. It does not sound like thermal recal. No messages in the event queue. There are nine drives in this system, so it's difficult to tell which one is doi... 11 Jul 2008 09:55
Best app for tape retrieval??
Hi - I have a load of old backup tapes that I need to get the data from as quick and easily as possible. What's the best software for this? Just plain and simple data retrieval?? I have a good budget I can use if needed. Also I think one or two tapes might be corrupt too, so if it could handle then that would... 10 Jul 2008 19:36

Hitachi Deskstar Bizarre Noise Fault
Hi All, I have recently had a couple of Hitachi Deskstar hard drives go bad on me. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had symptoms like these and can shed any light on what my chances are of getting any data recovered! When powered up, both drives emit a strange beeping sequence, please visit the following... 23 Jul 2008 10:12
Best Optical Backup Device/Media Today and Tomorrow
I used to wish for fast DVD-RAM but 12x media never became available in the states even though the drives are ubiquitous. DVD-R/RW with SecurDisc technology probably gets one pretty close to DVD-RAM reliability (?) and Mt. Rainier technology seems to have dropped off of the radar. When prices come down, Blue Ra... 9 Jul 2008 08:33
