Hi all,

with Windows XP SP3 you can not edit or view the Summary Information
of ZIP files anymore. This claim can be verified easily on XP SP3:

1) create ZIP file
2) view properties of ZIP file
3) select tab "Summary Information" > no functionality
4) rename ZIP file to "summary.bug"
5) view properties of "summary.bug" > all editable and viewable

I just received the astonishing information that this functionality is
crippled by design in SP3. I can not image one single reason why the
Summary Information that is stored in an additional stream of the file
is not viewable or editable on ZIP files anymore! It is just a stream
and totally independend of the file content itself.

Many customers and applications are using the Summary Information to
classify files. For me this is a bug that needs to be fixed with a
HOTFIX.

What is your opinion?

Best regards,
Holger

Were you also told why? I'd guess it has to do with "legal restrictions",
the same sort of legal restrictions that forced Microsoft to remove the
address bar from Explorer in SP3. If that's the case, don't hold your breath
waiting for a fix, there won't be any.

Explorer isn't the only thing that can view and edit summary information;
the format is documented. I'm not aware of specific tools, though.

of course the reason was kept in secrecy. The Summary Information is
offered by the Operating System to describe all sort of files.
Technically I can see no connection between file content and stream
that justifies the application of "legal restrictions" for ZIP files.

Here the file appendix enables or disables access to summary
information. Maybe we tech guys find the registry setting to overcome
this cripplement...

Clarification:

The bug in the summary information component in XP SP3 will be fixed
when more customers complain about it. Therefore I would like to
recommend that all companies missing the summary information on zip
files should file a bug report to Microsoft.

Oh dear,

Great news for vendors of zip software products that have shell integration
( like winzip, winrar...)
