From: cgebert on 3 Apr 2008 18:29 I have a SunBlade 150 that had 1GB of memory installed in it, one 512MB, and two 256MB sticks. I removed the twp 256MB sticks and put three more 512MB sticks in for a total of 2GB in 4 512MB sticks. When I tried to reboot it, it would power up, no post, no video. I pulled out all of the new memory and just left it with the one original 512MB stick. I tried to power it up again. The power button LED lights up momentarily, it beeps three times, no video and powers down on its own. What do the three beeps mean? What should I try?

Have you looked on sunsolve to see if there is a service manual online? That should tell you what the bleeps mean. The slots might need to be filled in a specific order (I have no idea if is is so). Clearly if you are filling them in some random order now, it might not work. Again the service manual should have this information. I've always managed to get free service manuals for any Sun I have ever owned (IPC, IPX, SPARC 4, SPARC 5, SPARC 20, Ultra 30, Ultra 60, Ultra 80, Blade 2000). I expect you can get one for a Blade 150.

Put the two 256MB sticks back and then try to boot. I HOPE that you were taking anti-static precautions when you did all this!!!!! If not, you could have an expensive repair bill!

Well, if all else fails, read the fine manuals: http://dlc.sun.com/pdf/816-4379-10/816-4379-10.pdf http://dlc.sun.com/pdf/816-5370-11/816-5370-11.pdf The initial configuration with three memory sticks was not supported (see section C.9.2.1 in the first referenced document). And you have to take care of the correct order (described in the second referenced document) in which memory sticks are to be put in, i.e. you have to start with the outer bank first, then moving inward. If my memory serves my right, three beeps might indicate a problem with your memory configuration. This sounds fixable if you follow the instructions carefully. Andreas.

I did actually read the manuals for once. I never found anything specific about the three beeps. Apparently, that means it doesn't like the RAM configuration. Once I put the 512MB stick in the first slot, it was booting again. I just read the section of the manual on installing memory. I didn't realize that they were particular. Of course, the same section of the manual says you can't use three DIMMs and that you should be using PC100, neither of which is correct. The new RAM didn't work because it was registered. They sent me the wrong memory. It will not even attempt to post in any configuration with the registered memory. Thanks for all the responses.
