How do I insert a superscript '2' in (say) iTunes?

Use the Character Palette. Some fonts (Apple Gothic Regular for
instance) have superscript numericals. I've just inserted a superscript
2 in an iTunes song title so it works.

Use the character palette by selecting edit > special characters
(doesn't seem to be there in iTunes, but you can select it from the
finder or something else). View "code tables" for "unicode".
Superscript 1, 2 and 3 are in the "latin-1 supplement" section, the
others are in the "superscripts and subscripts" section. Get to
the place you want to insert the character, then double click on
it in the character palette.

There may be an easier way to do this, and it only works because there
are unicode characters for superscript digits (unlike superscript
letters).

You can turn it on in the Finder via System Preferences->International
->Input Menu

Character Palette.

Search for 'superscript' in the search field at the bottom of the window.

(But then make sure you click back on the edit field in iTunes first,
otherwise it inserts the char into the search field!)

(BTW, that's Tiger - I can't remember if Panther is the same?)
