I suspect many get binned, or stripped for the parts. My home was burgled a few years back. The thiefs took, among other things, two ancient laptops. One was a 386 machine running DOS, simply used for incoming faxes. The other was a Win 95 machine that I just had left in a corner. Even in those years, the resell value of these machines was zilch. I think the theives just took them because laptops are known to be expensive.
