Hi. My husband got a new laptop yesterday with Vista installed. We had been
told about a year ago when thinking about buying a new laptop that his phone
wouldn't work with it. Well, that was wrong.

I installed the newest version of the Microsoft Mobile Device Center and
plugged the phone in. All went well and it synched very nicely into Outlook
for him.

Now here's the question.....does the sync center have to be running in the
background all the time or can he just run it prior to doing a sync?? I ask
because even though this computer is definately faster, I'm trying to tweak
his perfomance. I don't want to screw anything up.

Not sure I can answer your question definitively but do want to point out
that Sync Center and WMDC are two distinct programs. WAD is what is needed
to sync with a Windows Mobile Device. Sync Center seems to act as a
dashboard for general sync capabilities.

Hi Sven,

Ok, I didn't realize they were 2 different programs. What exactly is WAD?
I did try to do something with his phone before I installed WMDC and it
wouldn't do a darn thing. After installing that and plugging in the
cable/phone, it found it and set things up for it and the sync center put
itself in the taskbar and is running all the time. I was hoping it was just
a simple matter of disabling it via MSCONFIG and then running it via the
control panel before he tries to sync.

WAD is my keyboard acting up, and my not proofing my post before hitting
send. That was intended to be WMDC. Like I said though, don't really know
if you can shut them down. I'd give it a shot. Wouldn't surprise me if they
didn't start back up when you connect a WM device.

In Vista, without WAD, you can actually connect a device and browse it and
copy files to and from via the standard explorer. If you get the cab file
for WM programs you can copy that over and load (install) directly on the
device. If you also use Exchange sync, over the cell network, you could
actually use a WM device without ever putting WAD on your PC.

It really is my keyboard, BTW. New one on the way under warranty.

Interesting defect- a keyboard that produces Freudian slips! I'm sure many
people here have accused WMDC of being a wad of something! ;-)
