You don't. All of the content and indexing for all e-mail accounts in the
messaging program is in that file. Deleting it would probably cripple the
messaging app, requiring a hard-reset (deleting all user programs and data)
to recover from.

I'm perplexed as to why your Wizard is doing this. Mine dutifully deletes
any text message I select without issue.

I'm having this exact same problem.

I've had my Cingular 2125 since about October, and I average about 1,000
text messages in and out each month. About 2 or 3 times recently I ran into
an incredibly frustrating issue (that lead me to the issue being discussed in
this thread). Something locked up or whatever and I decided to power reset
my phone, and upon coming back, my text messages had rolled back days or
weeks. Any unread text messages from before the power cycle had vanished,
as well as any i'd received or sent in the last couple weeks. This has
happened 2 or 3 times now.

So I guessed that the volume of messages I had was causing issues with
indexing or something of that nature and that I guess I should delete all my
messages. I never figured I needed to and was annoyed that this might be the
solution, but whatever.

So I tried to delete my messages by emptying the inbox. Nothing happened
except the messaging app was locked up for a few hours. So I tried again,
and received a couple messages while it was processing and the messaging app
was completely locked up. When it finally finished the folder was empty,
including my unread messages. I accidentally ran down my battery later that
day and when it powered back up all the deleted messages were back (excpet
for those couple I didn't get to read of course).

So I decided I needed to try over night, and I started with the sent items
folder. Once again, the first attempt processed for hours, and all the
messages were still there. After a second attempt, once again taking hours,
the messages were all gone. I even believe it freed up a couple megs.

Excited by the success, I delete empty the inbox the following night
(requiring the same 2 attempt process). A week later I let my battery die
and when I power it back up EVERYTHING IS BACK AGAIN. My sent and my
received texts, and I'm back to not having enough storage to send an MMS.

Please help. For some reason it's hard to google this issue, but I've yet
to see any suggestions on what could be wrong. It's really disapointing
since the main reason I moved to windows mobile a few phones ago was the
ability to manage my info the way I wanted (my previous phone only let me
store like 100 messages total). I'm shocked that such a huge problem exists
(both the rollback issue, which my sister has also experienced on her WinMo6
Pantech Duo, and the undeletable messages).

Did you try PIM Backup or SKTools for mass-deletion? Also see my related
articles.

Please follow my articles; in them, I've explained why they return after a
reset: because you didn't power down (suspend) your phone before resetting
it. If you shut it down (a long-press of the Power button on some handsets
like teh Wizard), the databases will be flushed back to the storage and you
won't ever encounter situations like this.
