From: Ron Nicholson on 24 Jan 2006 19:41 Until a few days ago, the fastest CPU's were the RCA 1802's onboard the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft. However the New Horizons spacecraft is supposed to reach an even greater velocity relative to Earth. Does anyone know what CPU's are onboard this vehicle, and when (before or after Jupiter assist) it will reach the speed required to make it or them the fastest CPU's (that we humans know of at least). Highest speed relative to what? NH apparently set the record, previously held by Ulysses, for highest launch delta-V. But snarkiness aside, probably near perijove, if the Jupiter gravity assist comes off. There seems to be no information on the processor architecture(s) at a high level on the mission website. You would probably have to drill down to the PI's websites for the individual instruments. Or maybe ask on sci.space.science. Jon __@/

From: DerekSimmons@FrontierNet.net on 26 Jan 2006 11:00 I found an article that says the speed of the New Horizons is about 47,000 mph. What were the top speeds the Pioneer, Voyager and Ulysses traveled at? Derek

During the Jupiter encounter it was traveling at 82,000mph. Pioneer-11 was humpin' along at 108,000mph at Jupiter encounter.
