From: Smeenk, A.D. on 7 Sep 2005 03:08 Whatever you prefer: drumroll or finally! Seems someone has been listening: From http://blogs.technet.com/tabletpc/archive/2005/08/04/408649.aspx --- snip --- TIP Features. The extra download TIP is far from the final one we plan to ship but it does have several new features. Let's start with the edge target - that's the little tab on the side of the screen that you use to invoke it. Until now, the TIP was either docked at the top or bottom of your screen or floating when you brought it up "in-place". Unfortunately when it was floating it kept going away. Now if you bring it out from the edge target you can put it wherever you want and it will stay ("Stay TIP, good boy"). Getting rid of ink has also been improved, you can either us the eraser on your pen or do pretty much whatever wacky scratch-out you can think of. --- snip --- 'Good boy' indead, now I only have to find out if I can put Vista on my aging TC1000, or otherwise... are they going to backport this to the TabletPC version?? Now lets hope this also works for Remote Desktop... Alfred
From: Chris H. on 7 Sep 2005 09:56 From early reports, some of the whiz-bang features of Vista will not be available if certain graphics requirements are not present (i.e., more GPU resources), but Vista will be able to run on present units. One of the keys: RAM, and lots of it. Just like present units limited to 256 MB RAM don't always play nice, those with 512 do well, and those with a gig of RAM really zip along. 8-) However, it will take a very strong (probably 128 MB dedicated graphics processing) to make the glass, etc., functional. -- Chris H. Had to re-use some drivers from the TC1000 XP version (in compatibility mode for the buttons) but mostly it works. But, the most interesting thing (for me on the TC1000): the new TIP! Looks like the Longhorn/Vista team realised that handwriting recognition is a local function, not something the remote does. so: Handwriting also works for RDT! (yeah! if the TIP programmers are listing in, drink an Orange juice for celebration, I did :-)) Haven't tried VNC yet. Lets repeat that: Handwriting now also works for RDT! Also the floating works again like in the old days, altough the 'hardbutton' my TC1000 has for activating the TIP is not active anymore (the settings say something in the line of 'not needed anymore', also for the screen rotation, hm I do like them both), going to the side of the screen shows a small handle, that when clicked, brings up the TIP (even in full screen RDT). Now the only thing missing is the on screen keyboard during login... its not there by default. Alfred
From: Matt Hermans on 28 Sep 2005 01:10 Hi Alfred, good to hear about your experiences with Vista. I'm looking at the TC1100 and just posted a query about Vista and Tablet compatability. Have you got Aero-Glass enabled? if so- how laggy is it? i think there's a bug where you have to run @ 75hz for full-speed acceleration. Let me know, because it's one of the things i'm most concerned about before investing in a tablet. thanks, Matt "Smeenk, A.D." <alfreds(a)dbs-at-nospam-at-nl> wrote in message news:uOkYvtmwFHA.3800(a)TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl... > > "Chris H." <winxpnews(a)hotmail.com> wrote in message > news:OhJltR7sFHA.2792(a)tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl... >> From early reports, some of the whiz-bang features of Vista will not be >> available if certain graphics requirements are not present (i.e., more >> GPU resources), but Vista will be able to run on present units. From: Chris H. on 27 Sep 2005 08:55 Matt, I responded to your other post, but let me answer you here, too. The current 5219 build of Vista the testers and those who attended PDC a couple weeks back are running definitely is not an example of what Vista will be at release. Microsoft labeled the build "5219" because is it one of their internal builds beyond Beta 1. And 5219 isn't beta quality at all. There are many projected items either incomplete or missing. Making any sort of judgment on how Vista appears or operates at this point is way, way early in the game. -- Chris H.
