I can see two obvious possibilities with Thunderbird 3.0.5: First, define a
view that hides obvious spam messages, then select that view for the
newsgroup(s). Second, access a news server that filters out spam or
supports Cancel control messages in order to reduce the amount of spam.
Insofar I have been incorrect: You can set Thunderbird to access such a
server. Further questions about this are better asked elsewhere.
