From: Jack Gillis on 3 Mar 2007 16:02 I hope it is appropriate to post a question regarding Fedora Core 6 here. If not, please point me to the right group. I installed FC6 in unallocated space on HDA to dual boot with Windows XP. It went well and Fedora and XP showed up in the boot menu. I booted to Fedora and found my two printers (USB) working OK. However, I got a messages saying there were a hundred or so package updates available and I chose to download and install them. The next time I booted I got 2 Fedora entries in the boot menu, the first was Fedora Core 6(2.619-1,2911.6.4.fc6 and the second was Fedora Core 6(2.618-1, 6798.fc6. I believe the latter was on the original boot menu and not the former. Windows XP is still there. Furthermore, the loading process showed several of my usb ports with errors. I'm sure there is a log somewhere from which I can get the exact ports but I don't know where to find it. I suspect those are the ports that are on a separate PCI card in my machine to which the printers are connected. The mother board ports seem to be working just fine. All ports work fine under XP. I don't know if the printer/usb and two entry problems are related but they came about as soon as I ran the updates. Thank you very much.

The 2 menu entries are because the update included a kernel update. A kernel update will make the new kernel the default selection but you can always go back to using the previous one if you select it on reboot. As for your printer problem, I don't think you supplied enough information for anyone to help. If they are usb, try unplugging the usb cable and then putting it back in then look in the log for errors. This group answers redhat and fedora questions. The fedora forum is more active.

Thank you very much. Is there anyway to get rid of the entry for the earlier kernel? This is my first experience with Grub. I've not really looked into the printer/usb problem too much. Maybe it is just coincidental with the two entry thingy. There are many things to do to trouble shoot it including the old standby of powering down and unplugging the machine then start over again. Thanks again.

They install beside the existing system, not in place of it. You can still boot the older version, if you want (or need) to. Loren
