I read somewhere that sites created with coldfusion trial version no longer run
after the trial period has ended. I know you say that this trial version is
fully functional, but will the same thing happen - I want to create a site from
start to finish before I buy to make sure its exactly the software I am after,
but dont want site created to shut down should I decide not to purchase.

Developer Edition
ColdFusion 8 Developer is a free, fully functional version of ColdFusion for local development of applications that will be deployed
on either Standard or Enterprise servers. In addition to localhost, applications running on a Developer Edition server can be
accessed from two remote IP addresses, making team development even easier.

That's incorrect.

When you install CF, you get a CF webserver installed locally. After the
trial expires, you will still be able to use that CF webserver, but only to
serve files from the box on which it's installed. The net effect for you as
a developer is minimal or even invisible, since that's usually how you would
operate anyhow. When you create your CF pages, and upload them to the host,
those pages are no longer running on your Trial webserver, they are running
on the host's authenticated and fully valid webserver - they will run
without regard for *your* trial.

CF server will run locally to create a site and any other sites you want. If
you don't enter a serial number into it, CF server will work locally for as
long as you want. No other IP address will be able to access your local
install of cf server.

IF you create a cf site and upload to a host that has a commercial license
for cf server, it will work. period.

There is nothing in the code of the pages you create that will time out. It
has to do with having a valid server install of cf that can time out.

this is about cf8 but the info is the same now afaik:

http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/editions/

Trial Edition

For evaluating ColdFusion 8 Enterprise, we offer a free 30-day trial. This
is a fully functional server that includes all the features of ColdFusion 8
Enterprise. At the end of the 30-day trial, the Trial Edition automatically
becomes the Developer Edition. At any time, full commercial deployment
capabilities for an existing Trial or Developer Edition installation can be
activated by simply inserting a valid serial number for ColdFusion 8
Standard or ColdFusion 8 Enterprise without the need to reinstall.
