From: Kaaaaa on 13 Sep 2005 07:26 Hello I am trying to install a home network using an ethernet cable connecting my laptop and PC that both run windows XP home editions for multiplayer gaming and sharing files. However when I use the network connection wizard my laptop fails to recognise the ethernet connection and displays a red cross and states that it is unplugged when it is. Could you please give any suggestions as to my next course of action.

If you are trying to connect the two computers together directly, you must use a crossover ethernet cable. Get one from the store. If you have a broadband Internet connection, get a router and then use straight ethernet to connect the machines to the router. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ http://www.bcmaven.com/networking/faq.htm http://www.bcmaven.com/networking/myths.htm http://www.ezlan.net/index.html Linksys networking information (not a plug for Linksys - this site has a good pictorial layout of networks) http://www.linksys.com/edu/ Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" Are you using a cross-over cable? A stright-thru aka patch cable won't work here. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/connecting-two-computers-with.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/connecting-two-computers-with.html If you're using a cross-over cable already, make sure that it's one that works. And run hardware diagnosis tics from both computers. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/dealing-with-physical-network-problems.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/dealing-with-physical-network-problems.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
