How I got my Palm Tungsten T to connect to the Internet via Bluetooth using
Cingular GPRS and a Nokia 6230

After a week of trying to connect the Tungsten T with Bluetooth using my new
Nokia 6230 phone, only to get the dreaded "Subscribe to GPRS first" message
on the phone, I found the combingation of settings on the Tungsten T and the
6230 that now WORKS. These settings were found in various newsgroups and
internet forums, so I take no credit for them other than patching them
together and...voila!

Settings on the Nokia 6230:

Menu: Settings: Connectivity: GPRS: GPRS Connection: Always Online
GPRS Modem Settings: Active Access Point: Select: Access Point 2 -
Activate, then...
Edit Access Point: Alias For Access Point - Select - New Alias:
MediaNet ...then
GPRS Access Point - Select: enter: wap.cingular - OK
Services: Settings: Connection Settings: Edit Active Service Settings:
Settings Name: Express
Homepage: http://device.home
Proxies: Enable
Primary Proxy: wireless.cingular.com - OK
Port: 80 - OK

Secondary Proxy: wireless.cingular.com - OK
Port: 8080 - OK
Data Bearer: GPRS
Bearer Settings: GPRS Access Point: wap.cingular
Authentication Type: Normal
Login Type: Automatic
User name: WAP(a)CINGULARGPRS.COM (all caps)
Password: CINGULAR1 (again, all caps)

On the Palm Tungsten T, you first should visit www.palmone.com Tungsten T
support, and download and install, in order, first the palm tungsten T
update and then the Phone Link update from last November.

Go ahead and establish a "trusted pair" between the Tungsten T and the 6230
(make sure Bluetooth is active on your Palm, and also set to ON on the
6230). Do this by first tapping on Phone Link on the Palm, tap Phone
Connection and follow the prompts. When the Palm asks for the phone's code,
enter any 16-digits (use consecutive digits or 16 of the same digit, so long
as you remember it). Then the phone will ask if you want to accept the
connection...hit OK on the phone and then enter the same 16 digit code you
used on the Palm. It *should* then tell you they have established a trusted
pair.

The Palm will then prompt you to set up your network service...tap OK and
follow the prompts using the Nokia 6230 phone, bluetooth, etc. When it's
all said and done, it will prompt you to Connect. Chances are at this
point, if you try to connect you will get the "subscribe to GPRS first"
error on your phone...you now need to change some more settings on the Palm:

Go to Preferences - Connection - LAN Nokia 6230 - Edit - Connect To: Local
Network - Via: Bluetooth - Device: Nokia 6230 - Details: Speed: 57,600 -
Flow Ctl: Automatic
Hit OK back out and then Done to get back to Preferences.

Select Network:

Service should read Cingular GPRS
User Name: WAP(a)CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Connection: LAN Nokia 6230

Then hit Details
Connection type = PPP
Idle Timeout = 3 minutes
Query DNS = checked
IP Address = checked Automatic

Now, tap Script, where we will rewrite the script:

Click on the first line and change the tag to "End". This will clear the
entire
script so you can start from scratch. Now change the script to the to
the following (after each line is set, a new End line appears, so tap on
each End line to continue. Pay attention to the difference between "Send:"
and "Send CR:")

Send: atz
Send CR:
Send: at+cgdcont=1,"IP",WAP.CINGULAR","0.0.0.0",0,0
Send CR:
Delay: 1
Send: atd*99#
Send CR:
End:

After you have completed these entries, go back to the Network screen, make
sure your Palm bluetooth settings are on, discoverable and allow wakeup
(they had to be in order to establish a trusted pair), make sure bluetooth
is ON on your Nokia 6230. Hit Connect on the palm's Network screen and
hopefully you will establish a connection. Once you are connected, hit
Done, and open Web Pro to browse.

When I did this the first time, I encountered a few hiccups and disconnects.
The Palm occasionally will freeze briefly, or freeze totally, requiring a
soft reset. I also notice that every now and then, the Palm also will
spontaneously reset itself. I don't know if this is caused by a weak signal
strength (here in the house I typically only have 2 bars if that), or if
this setup is just an inherent instability between the older Tungsten T and
the newer Nokia 6230 drivers, etc.

Whatever...it works. I use the default webpro.palm.com host address and
default home page, as it seems to load quickly and leads to numerous
Palm-friendly familiar sites. Other "regular" web sites seem to be more
problematic, possibly because of the size of downloads, the limited size of
the cache on my Palm Tungsten T (which is limited by available memory).

Good luck!
