I picked up a used USB Zip drive at a garage sale.
They said it worked, they just did not need it anymore.
I dont always believe things like this, but it does look like a new
drive, for whatever that's worth.

Anyhow, I plugged it in. Win98se recognized it at new hardware.
However, I cant access it. It shows up with a yellow error under
Device Manager. I got the driver from Iomega and also installed their
latest software. It still dont show up as a drive letter.

Maybe it's defective, but I am thinking more like it's just not being
recognized properly. Can anyone help?

This is the USB version of the 250meg Zip Drive from Iomega.

I only want this to work for a short time so I can retrieve the data I
have on about 8 (100meg) zip disks. I used to use them, and have lots
of photos on them. My old 100meg Zip drive died. Once I get the data
off of them, all the zip stuff goes on Ebay. Flash memory is cheaper
and more reliable these days.

I did try many of the suggstions on the Iomega website, I unplugged
all other USB devices, and plugged the zip drive directly into the
computer, rather than using my hub. Still dont work......

Another thing, can this be accessed from DOS? I know my old drives
could be, but I have my doubts with a USB device. If I can get it to
work from Dos, that's fine too. All the photos are in 8+3 filenames.

My other option is to take it to a friends computer who uses XP. Will
XP recognize it directly without drivers? I could copy my data onto
flash sticks from their computer.

All help appreciated.

USB can be hit-or-miss. When USB works, it does a great job, but
sometimes it (mysteriously) stops working for no known reason at all.
Win98 and Win2000 do not have built-in USB driver capability, WinXP
does. For some USB devices, if you plug it in Windows creates a link
to a driver and then it won't install the device driver you need.

I suggest install the driver on another machine that has never seen a
USB Zip Drive. Then, and only then, plug in the Zip drive. Do not
use a USB hub. Do not plug it in without installing the driver first.

Drivers can be tricky, especially when it comes to USB.

Are you using it with an external psu? It needs it - at least, my Zip
250 does.

Sometimes this trick will help. Make sure you've the right drivers
available (.inf, .sys). Remove the disk. Boot to safe mode, goto device
manager and delete all Iomega entries, and all obsolete USB stuff.

Reboot, and plug in the zip disk. If you're lucky Windows will ask for a
driver, which you can provide.

I found DOS drivers that recognize my external USB HDD's and every
flash (thumb) drive, mp3 player I've tried them with.

The magic DOS driver for the flash drives I found is dI1000dd.sys. I
don't remember where I got it. It's 16,368 Bytes. A Google search for
it should work. Let me know here if you can't find it.

The other DOS drivers for USB drives are USBASPI.SYS with
NJ32DISK.SYS. Also, ASPIHCI.SYS or ASPUHCI.SYS depending on your USB
controller (ohci or uhci.)

They can be found by following a trail starting on those DOS 7/17/07
6:39:24 AMdrivers and bootdisk sites like http://www.bootdisk.com
