Unable to start TV

From: Borderline Psycho on 10 Oct 2006 20:24 I had a problem with MMC, and couldn't get it resolved. So, I stupidly decided it was a good time to upgrade the drivers and MMC programs. I downloaded the Catalyst 6.9 drivers, and all the MMC 9.15 files, then uninstalled all my current ATI stuff using the ATI uninstall program. I then booted into Safe Mode, and used Driver Cleaner Pro to really scrub all the ATI residue out of my computer. At this point all the old ATI stuff should be completely gone. After another reboot, I reinstalled the 6.9 drivers, and rebooted again. Then I installed the MMC programs in order, except the DVD portion because I don't really need it, plus I'm sick to death of hunting down my original install CD every time I update. I rebooted every time it prompted, which happened once or twice during the MMC install process. Now, I can't get the TV to work at all. I get a window saying: ------------------------------- Unable to start TV Check the Windows Device Manager to ensure that the correct video driver has been installed and is working properly before attempting to restart TV. -------------------------------- FM radio works fine. Does anybody have any clue what the correct video driver is? Under "Sound, video and game controllers" I've got the "ATI T200 Unified AVStream Driver" installed, but nothing else that looks like it came from ATI. Shouldn't there be WDM drivers installed somewhere, or was that just for the older versions of MMC? I've looked at the ATI KB, but of course that was as close to useless without actually being broken.

I just went through this and got that "Unable to start..." message after reinstalling the ATI drivers. I had to then install the WDM drivers and that corrected the problem. Paul

On your advice, I just downloaded the WDM only driver pack and installed it. It only installed the T200 unified AVStream driver, like I already had installed from the full driver pack. There are no drivers labeled WDM, or anything that would leave me to believe it's for the the tuner. It still won't let me watch TV. I get the same error message.

In my case, I have a download labeled "tv-capture-wdm-6-14-10-6246v3" The folder contains a setup.exe and numerous .ini files and a couple of .cab files. Under that folder isfolder "WDM-XP" This contains sevearl .sys files, .AX files, a .DLL After I intalled my ATI drivers ( I'm sticking with some older drivers for my AIW 9600 Pro ) I ran the setup in the folder listed above. That's what cleared my error message and allowed the TV to initialize and run. If you have other hardware or a recent version of the drivers, your installation may be different. I tend NOT to run out and install "the latest drivers" if my hardware is working and satifying my requirements. As they sya, YMMV. Paul

Most likely reason for the "Unable to start TV" using MMC9.13-4-5 is the encoder didn't install properly. It requires .NET. The Unified driver >is< the WDM driver. I use the cleaning procedure at ati.com/install. Can't say for sure w/o knowing what hardware you have but you'd probably be happier with 9.08 or 9.06 if you want to use Guide+, unless you have a newer card. If something stops working in an install usually doing a repair install is the easiest fix. The problem most people have with TVoD is not being able to turn it off in MMC9.13-4-5. TVoD gets turned off when I use the S-Video port on my AIW w/o using TVoD. Have to go to another video port and tell it to use it before going back to the tuner on the HDTV Wonder to get it going again. Haven't seen anyone else mention this so could just be my system.
