I downloaded the Fireworks Demo to use along with the Macromedia Studio 8
reference book. as I followed the lessons through the disc that was suppled
with the book. I came to a .png file that I tried to save and got "File is
Locked" message. I also tried unlocking the file through the Property
Inspector. (Bitmap Layer)

Sounds like you've opened the file from the disc itself. If you do that and
save, Fireworks will be trying to save to the disc which it cannot. Either
save as to save it somewhere on your hard drive or copy the contents of the
disc on your computer before using them.
