From: Jonathan L. Parker on 1 Nov 2007 18:31 I've got an HP Scanjet 3970 that worked fairly decently with one of the two Windows XP laptops I used to own. The one it worked with is sadly no more, but I just used it as an excuse to splurge on a MacBook Pro on which I'm running both OS X 10.4.10 and Vista Business, the latter virtually via VMWare Fusion. Anyway, I just got around to dusting off the scanner to see if and how well I could get it to work now. So far with OS X I haven't. HP lists two software packages on their website and I've tried downloading and installing both, but when I try to scan HP Scan Pro exits with a "quit unexpectedly" error message. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times to no avail. The scanner WILL work in Vista, but the integrated transparency adapter in the lid appears to be unavailable (the option for selecting it is grayed out). HP says the Vista driver they have on their website is the best it'll ever be since they aren't going to upgrade it. Gee, thanks HP. I wish I'd known you'd take that attitude before I bought this thing-which I chose mainly for its slide-scanning ability. Just see how long it is before I buy anything else from you. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice... Well, enough of that. Is anyone out there with a 3970 or similar model able to use it with OS X on an Intel Mac (I suspect this may be the problem) or scan slides in Vista?
