From: Hangiman john Hangiman on 12 May 2008 15:06 I am currently completing a degree in project management! At present I am learning advanced functions on MS Project, however I am lacking, as you may say 'field experience'. As part of my module I need to study User Defined Fields and 'Red Amber Green' Reporting. Including the use of formulae and filters. My question is mainly aimed at experienced project managers who customise Project to suit their needs. Please could someone forward me some information i.e a list of different types of uses for the user defined fields and what you have used them for in your projects! For example, examining issues resourse planning task planning overtime authority required the use of macros etc Any help would be appreciated enormously!

The uses to which the spare fields can be put are limited only by imagination. It is best to start off with some simple examples, such as using a spare cost field and multplying the cost by some factor to get a price. And then push the envelope a bit. But it is pointless to dream up calculations that have no purpose or for which there is no need. Filters are an important way of answering important questions, such as "which tasks cost more than $1000?", so they can be used to analyse a project plan, with the intention of using the answers to improve the plan. They are useful for running diagnostics, such as "which tasks have negative lag?". I think Red Amber Green Reporting is a trivial problem and I don't know why the IT biz is so in love with it. After all, it is no big deal to convert numbers into colours.
