Strange. For one of my vfat partitions, I have
$ ll -d /var/mnt/hda1
drwxrwxrwx 76 root root 16384 Dec 31 1969 /var/mnt/hda1/
With the mount output
/dev/hda1 on /var/mnt/hda1 type vfat (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,users,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850)
$ grep /var/mnt/hda1 /etc/mtab
/dev/hda1 /var/mnt/hda1 vfat rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,users,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850 0 0
$ grep /var/mnt/hda1 /etc/fstab
/dev/hda1 /var/mnt/hda1 vfat defaults,users,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850 0 0

I'd try booting from a dos disk, and running scandisk on that file system.
Use http://www.freedos.org/freedos/software/, if you don't have
a bootable dos disk, with scandisk on it.
