I failed to mention to both of you that these machines are my first
experience with the 64 bit version of Vista. Please note that I can
serve the network with an XP-Pro box AND my Vista laptop running the
32 bit Ultimate version of Vista. The 64 bit workstations run just
fine with the XP-Pro and 32 bit version of Vista as the server.

Also the error the hangs the app is with plain ole windows
explorer.exe not internet explorer.

Also, the compatibility mode suggested by HP did not help at all.

Thanks for the input into this...I really need to get it straightened
out.

Mary,

Ok then, the error is nothing to do with anything Willie or I suggested
:-).

Sorry - I now see you meant the standard windows explorer. Again, being
64 bit is irrelevant because my box is a 64 bit OS on Vista. So instead,
let's investigate what IS different on the 64 bit box.

Where is the data being shared from?

A new folder on the root or from somewhere on the machine?

Being Vista, are you using a Vista-safe location? We spoke about this in
Thomson. One difference on a 64 bit machine is that there are now two
Program Files folders (one for 32 bit and one for 64) and there are in
effect two registries also. At what point in the application does it
hang? How about putting in those debug outputs I showed you to find the
exact point the app crashes. This is likely to help narrow down the
problem.

On my our Vista Computers sometimes runtime errors do not generate a
standard error dialog but give these "hang" messages. Some other times the
same runtime errors do display in the normal VO way. Vista seems to be a bit
more sensible to runtime errors. Until now I do not know what is influencing
this.

Hey Everyone,

Thank you for the comments and thoughts. The problem was simple
sharing. It apparently cannot be used on this version of Vista. You
have to share with password protection and create account(s) and
password(s) on the server with administrator rights that match the
account and password on each workstation, also with administrator
rights.

"If you have password protected sharing disabled, use the File Sharing
window to select the Guest or Everyone account. This is equivalent to
simple file sharing in Windows XP."...works in Vista Ultimate not in
64 bit version even though everyone is shown with full control as
permissions.

Willie, this was your suggestion the other night. The only thing is I
still had user account and password protection turned off so it didn't
make any difference. Geoff thanks for the input. The material from the
master class continues to be invaluable...
