Would I be correct in guessing this is a new Verizon DSL
installation? If so, don't worry about finding an article
or howto, because it isn't really necessary. Here's an
attempt at what you'll need to know.

Do you know what kind of modem/router/firewall box you'll be
using? If it's the Westell 327W, then "admin" and
"password" are the default username and password you'll need
to enter to configure the router. (I had to Google for that
a few months ago after a move to a new house.)

Your DSL service should dictate whether you are using
dynamic or static IP address on the WAN side of the router.
If you're using dynamic, everything will "just work". If
you're using static, Verizon will need to give you the IP
addres, netmask, etc. to get the router talking with the
Verizon stuff.

You need to decide whether to use static or dynamic (DHCP)
local addresses on the LAN side of the router. Dynamic is
the easiest, at least to get started with. If you really
want static LAN IP addresses, the MandrX GUI network setup
tools are pretty self-explanatory, as is the Westell stuff.
Please repost if you have difficulties with that.

One suggestion: If you're not using wireless, disable it.
Setting up a _secure_ wireless setup is not trivial. If you
(like me) don't want to learn all of that, and if you're not
going to be using wireless, it's easy to disable through the
router's web interface.

(My Westell started acting strangely, dropping WAN/internet
connectivity every few days. Verizon's "tech support" told
me to hold in the reset button for some number of seconds to
restore factory defaults/firmware. So far, that seems to
have done the trick. Maybe some of the flash got corrupted
after leaving the factory the first time.)

Good luck.

The unit Verizon gave me 8 months ago (Jan. 2005) is a
combination modem and router, a Westell 327W. I suspect you
will be getting a combo unit, likely the same model. If
they give you a combo modem/router unit, you don't need
another router (unless you have more than four computers).

If you do end up needing to buy a separate router, avoid the
Siemens Speedbump/Speedstream 2604. It loses packets, both
to/from its built-in web server and through it to/from the
internet.

If you want to buy a backup modem (in case the one they
supply dies) you can find older modem-only units at Goodwill
(and/or other thrift stores). I'm told they will work, but
the ones I have found are modems only, not routers.

At least for a while, I'd suggest we keep the conversation
in the newsgroup, mainly so the next person/people who
come(s) along with the same questions can find the archived
answers via groups.google.com.

It's a pretty good bet that they'll send you a modem which connects to the
computer via ethernet. If this is so, it is a good thing. The setup will
be trivial, and you should be able to pretty much follow the instructions
for setting up a MAC. Basically, most Linux distros will install with DHCP
enabled, and that's all you need.
