I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop. I have a vertical line almost the
entire length of the monitor, especially when there is a dark background.

Is this a hardware problem, or perhaps driver-related? It isn't really
annoying, I just don't want it to get any worse.

Thanks for any input.

You might put an external monitor on it to see if it is LCD or video driver
related.

It's a hardwareproblem. It has a bad joint in one of the datacables.
This cables are intergrated with the LCD it self, and can't be soldered,
the are glued (spelling) to the LCD-interfaceboard. Replacing the
display is the only option.

You mean a trinitron, or diamatron display with two HORIZONTAL lines.
That is nothing to worry about, but a line in a LCD-display is a serious
defect, and can cost a fair bit of money.
