From: Gr3y on 9 Sep 2005 07:01 I have an AVI used in my projector. Imported (linked obviously) as an AVI (not quicktime). It is compressed using Xvid Mpeg 4 codec. Now the video plays fine on 2/3 test machines. On the 3rd the audio soundtrack to the video can be heard (no error messages are reported) but there is no video image displayed, neither do I get the RED X indicating a missing element. I know the codec is present as I installed it myself. Also the video plays without problem outside of director ie in Windows Media Player. Thanks if anyone can help (Using DIrector MX 2004.)
From: Rob Dillon *TMM* on 10 Sep 2005 21:14 If the video plays and you get sound then the media is recognized and the player runs. Since you hear the sound, the audio codec is installed and working. If you have no picture, then the player either does not have the video codec that it needs, or it doesn't recognize the codec information from the file. It thinks that the video is using a different codec. -- Rob _______ Rob Dillon Team Macromedia http://www.ddg-designs.com 412-243-9119 http://www.macromedia.com/software/trial/
From: Gr3y on 12 Sep 2005 10:12 Thanks for your reply Rob. Let me clarify though. The Video codec is definitely installed. The AVI file plays perfectly in media players external to director but in director only audio track is in evidence and the video cannot be seen. I heard that it may be to to with the video not 'refreshing' whatever this means. Can it be combattted with lingo? Thanks again:confused;
From: Rob Dillon *TMM* on 13 Sep 2005 11:58 Well it could be almost anything then. Director doesn't actually play the DV files. It just recognizes the file type in the sprite instance in the score and then, using the QT xtra for instance, tells the QT player to play back the file that you've set in your score. If you have a number of DV files set to play one after the other, and they all don't share the same codec, or even file type, then it may be possible for Director to continue to try and use the same player for each file. Having a space of even one frame between the DV sprites usually solves that problem. -- Rob _______ Rob Dillon Team Macromedia http://www.ddg-designs.com 412-243-9119 http://www.macromedia.com/software/trial/

Sorry for the lack of detail, but I haven't seen this issue in a long time. Just because WMP plays the video doesn't mean that Director will be able to play it (depends on what version of Director you are authoring). FWIW, Director used to use the old Video for Windows technology so Codecs that were present in WMP were not always present in VFW. Maybe someone can chime in with more info...or maybe this doesn't apply to the newest versions of Director? hth, Doug |
