When I go to look at files in Explorer, the default is icons. I can change it
to "details" but cannot make that my default option. Does anyone know how to
make it the default?

Explorer is part of the operating system not Office. You would normally
ask in a group for the operating system you are using. The short answer
to your question is to click "Tools, Folder Options, View, Apply to all
folders".
