I just installed Wxp as guest OS on my Kubuntu to run some sw not available
in linux. from then on, the entire PC gets really slow, because of memory
swappin to the HD.

As my PC is already a few years old and ddr ram costs double compared to
ddr2, I'm thinking of replacing the entire motherboard, cpu & ram.

My use of the PC would be:
Kubuntu
- general PC use (internet, mail, multimedia, no heavy gaming)
- mythtv server & client + dvd ripping
Windows
- retrieve solar panel production readings
- X10 home automation sw

What kind of MB-CPU-RAM would be recomended in this case ?

I have a NVIDIA 7300GT AGP video board, are there modern MBs available with
AGP, or should I go for a MB with integrated NVIDIA video chip ?

Concerning CPUs, does linux make use of the dual or quad cores out of the
box, or do you need sw specially written for multicore usage ?

Virtualization needs memory. A CPU helping virtualization will also speed up
things.

Forget about trying to save the AGP board, if you are going to build a
new system then you should get a new PCI express graphics card. I just
bought an Nvidia card for $50 from Newegg, you might want to get a better
one with more TV features.

As for CPU, the Core2s are the clear winners. They are faster on a clock
for clock basis than the AM2s, they are available at higher clock
frequencies, and they overclock better. If you can wait a month then you
can get the 2nd generation Core2s, the Penryns, which are faster and
lower power.

Linux has had multiprocessor support for years, it's supported right out
of the box. Utilization of multiple cores is dependent on the
applications that you are running and the number of programs that you are
running. Anyone using VMs will make good use of a multicore system. A
single core Intel system isn't even available, your choice is between two
and four cores. You will probably be better off with a faster clocked
dual core than with a four core. Also you shouldn't skimp on memory, get
at least 4G. If you look at Newegg you'll see that 4G of DDR2 800 is
available for as little as $105 so there is no reason to get less.

Maybe you would get better performance by running that software in Wine
instead?

I allready tried that, but they don't work in Wine :-(
