From: kunal on 27 Dec 2007 22:05 It is no brainer, that after a phenomenal multi-touch interface on phones Apple must be developing something similar on the tablet side. Is Microsoft working on the killer version of Tablet PC at this point? I hope so, otherwise with all the best initiative from Microsoft the limelight may shift to Apple in this area as well.
From: Chris H on 27 Dec 2007 22:34 Microsoft has not announced any plans for a next version, although they're always working on something. Don't look for anything surprising in the Vista era, though, because they've already moved beyond that in development. -- Chris H. From: Josh Einstein on 29 Dec 2007 00:14 I think Microsoft is waiting for Apple to make some more of Vista's features "cool" like they did for flicks and rotating displays. :) You're right though, Windows for keyboard/mouse is not ideal for touch. Personally I think they should go back to the drawing board and get something really sexy built on Windows CE. The argument that "all of your existing applications work on a UMPC" isn't very compelling when few applications are actually useable at that resolution and without a dedicated keyboard. -- Josh Einstein (Tablet PC MVP) Einstein Technologies Tablet Enhancements for Outlook - Try it free: www.tabletoutlook.com "kunal" <kunal(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:DD44B900-60CD-4C30-8325-6DC614C471A2(a)microsoft.com... > It is no brainer, that after a phenomenal multi-touch interface on phones > Apple must be developing something similar on the tablet side. From: Lon Orenstein on 29 Dec 2007 07:36 I'm with you, Josh, a dedicated keyboard guy. I know Bill thinks that speech recognition will kill off the keyboard but I'm 58 and not sure I'll see that day... The HTC Shift may be the best answer for us -- the keyboard looks useable. It's got a 7" screen -- maybe 8" is the optimum for chubby fingers. The industry seems to be settling on 7" as the UMPC standard and if I can type with 6-8 fingers, I'll be thrilled. Have you touched a Shift yet? From: Josh Einstein on 31 Dec 2007 08:40 Not yet, but I did have a Acer C110 convertible tablet a while back which was 10" and I loved that design. I could have probably gone a little bit smaller, but not much. But my argument has more to do with the fact that there needs to be more apps designed for the new form factors (like iNav, I think is great). And if you need new apps, why build on an OS that only runs on power-hungry hardware? The benefits of Windows CE over other embedded solutions is that there are very familiar API's like Win32 and .NET. They are subsets, sure, but they are rich subsets. Ordinary developers usually find it quite easy to develop for Windows CE/Windows Mobile. -- Josh Einstein (Tablet PC MVP) Einstein Technologies Tablet Enhancements for Outlook - Try it free: www.tabletoutlook.com "Lon Orenstein" <Lon(a)pinpointtools.com> wrote in message news:7C06CC79-0777-46C8-83C1-93466232C97B(a)microsoft.com... > I'm with you, Josh, a dedicated keyboard guy.
