Does anyone have a kit from David Royer / Mojave Audio, the MA-2 tube
mic mod referenced in a Tape Op and I think a Recording article, though
I don't have the issue or date of the article... This kit took a
chinese mic (A MXL 2001) and gutted the PCBs. It was discontinued in
May of this year. I know Mojave now sells a tube mic, but I'm
looking for a kit to build, and more so, can't afford anything beyond
what the kits cost. If you have one available that you'd like to go
to good use, please let me know at prklem at gmail thanks.

You're confusing two different kits: The Royer/Mojave MA-2 tube mod was
published in Tape Op; the Recording article you're thinking of was
Scott Dorsey/Kludge Audio's FET mod.

Scott was (& may still be) selling PCB's for the FET kit for $25, the
rest of the parts only cost about $20, & a back issue of Recording is
less than $10. If you already own an MXL2001 or equivalent that will be
the best $55 you can possibly throw at it.

I own a pair of MXL2001's, one w/ the Royer/Mojave mod & the other w/
the Doresey/Kludge mod. Both are *major* improvements...but I still
find myself somewhat more impressed w/ Scott's design, if for no other
reason than it was so cheap.

Right. And you can build both of them just on perfboard if you want
to avoid buying the PC boards. It is a pain in the neck, though.
No kit needed, just fairly common parts.

I still have boards for my article. I don't know if Royer has boards
for his, but you could build either one without the board, just doing
it by hand on perf.

The article I did was from the January 2002 issue of Recording, but if
you call 303-516-9118 and ask them for that Chinese mike article, they
know which one it is. I bet if you called Tape Op and asked them for
the Royer article, they'd know too.

I put all the money in the capacitors and took out everything that
wasn't absolutely necessary.

I'm right now working on a modification for another common microphone,
which is going to use a transformer. Unfortunately the cheapest good
transformer for the application costs more than everything else in
the kit put together. Sounds nice, though. So far I have perfboarded
a couple and the first PC board layout went off to the fab house this
morning.

I am not confusing the two - I am looking for the Royer mod kit. I did
do Scott's mod, and was very happy with the results. I've never perfed
a board before, nor do i have a parts list - any rec's on how i could
complete it?
if i just ordered it 1 year ago...

Call Tape Op and ask them to send the back issue.

Perfboard is fun. The ARRL Radio Amateur Handbook used to have a whole
section on prototype construction... perfboard, tagboard, dead bug, and
all the other ways to hand-wire things without a PC board.

You can also lay your own boards out using the expresspcb.com service.
It's very inexpensive even for small runs. Easier than making them in
the kitchen sink with sensitized material like most folks used to do
for prototype boards.
