From: Ian on 8 Aug 2005 18:01 Sorry if this has been asked before but does any one know if Wanadoo adsl modems work with any of the distro's? I'm thinking of signing up. I am using Fedora core 2 atm but have Mandrake 10.1 also. Or should I get a different adsl modem? Ian.

I'm thinking of signing up. Wanadoo generally supply a Speedtouch 330 modem - see VERY recent thread about this modem - but this could, in theory anyway, change at short notice! The Speedtouch can be made to work with almost ANY recent distribution. : I am using Fedora core 2 atm but have Mandrake 10.1 also. : Or should I get a different adsl modem? An ADSL modem/router will be even easier to connect using RJ45 cable if there is "Ethernet" capability in the PC

I suspect the general advice would be to plan on getting an ADSL router/modem and an ethernet card (if your motherboard doesn't have one on it). They're fairly cheap, and OS-independent (you just need to get ethernet working, and they're much easier than some random USB modem). Also the router gives you NAT, and maybe even a proper firewall, so that's another layer of security against script kiddies.

Upon getting ADSL a few months ago I bought an ADSL router with 4 ethernet ports and a wireless port ,make D-Link -G604t with PCMCIA transceiver DSL-G650+ (as a package) for a laptop. It worked first time with both Windoze and Linux. The D-link site refers to Linux drivers. Another Linux compatible ADSL modem/router make is Linksys. Instead of a free ADSL (USB connected) modem I opted for 3 filters which I received free of charge from my provider Pipex. On a different tack ,I would suggest you choose an ADSL package which provides you with ample (monthly)download capacity ; important if you download regularly to update your Linux box. They can be had for about ý25 these days and are generally a better solution allowing you to connect more than one system while also taking away the whole question of whether it is supported or not. Wanadoo's ADSL services look fairly expensive to me. Their entry level service only includes 2GB per month of usage. If you download much of anything you'll exceed that and they don't seem to state on their website what happens then. I'm biased of course however I'd recommend you look at alternatives (including our services if you like).
