From: Chris Maaskant on 18 Dec 2005 15:28 Hi all, i have been using a philips webcam (PCVC680K vesta pro) for two years now and never had any problems with it using the pwc module, but this changed with SUSE 10.0. I can't get any picture from the device. var/log/messages show no errors: Dec 18 21:17:06 SUSE10 kernel: usb 4-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 25 Dec 18 21:17:06 SUSE10 kernel: pwc Philips PCVC680K (Vesta Pro) USB webcam detected. Dec 18 21:17:07 SUSE10 kernel: pwc Registered as /dev/video0. When i try to use the device with xawtv i get: chris(a)SUSE10:~> xawtv -device /dev/video0 This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.13-15.7-smp) X Error of failed request: XF86DGANoDirectVideoMode Major opcode of failed request: 137 (XFree86-DGA) Minor opcode of failed request: 1 (XF86DGAGetVideoLL) Serial number of failed request: 65 Current serial number in output stream: 65 I've been searching for the error given by xawtv with google but i can't find anything relevant, or anything i can read since most of the results from google were not in english or dutch. Now when webcams are finaly getting supported by some instant messengers like amsn and kopete, my webcam stops working :-( I'm always this lucky :-/ Can anyone help? Still no picture though, now i get: This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.13-15.7-smp) /dev/video0 [v4l]: no overlay support v4l-conf had some trouble, trying to continue anyway ioctl: VIDIOCMCAPTURE(frame=0;height=96;width=128;format=7): Ongeldig argument ioctl: VIDIOCMCAPTURE(frame=0;height=96;width=128;format=5): Ongeldig argument ioctl: VIDIOCMCAPTURE(frame=0;height=96;width=128;format=4): Ongeldig argument ioctl: VIDIOCMCAPTURE(frame=0;height=96;width=128;format=1): Ongeldig argument ioctl: VIDIOCMCAPTURE(frame=0;height=96;width=128;format=13): Ongeldig argument where "ongeldig" means invalid. So now i'm googleing for getting overlay support.. Don't hessitate to help me in the meantime :-) Chris Maaskant. -- To reply via E-mail remove NOSPAMPLEASE

Greetings Chris, Sounds like you may have upgraded to SuSE 10? You may need to install a newer driver for your kernel. Take a look at www.saillard.org. Look in the Linux > Phillips Web cam driver section. I too use the 2.6.13-15.7-smp kernel and found the pwc-10.0.7a.tar.bz2 better for my kernel than the pwc-10.0.9-rc1, but I'm running a Logitech QC Pro 3000. The source modules seem to work better than the rpm's, again my experience. For help in compiling the module see http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/16340.html. Good luck! Regards, Solor^

I'm wondering if trying to force /dev/video0 causes a problem? I'm not currently using a webcam, but when I did I used kdetv and started it with no options. On the menu 'video' you could select the cam.

I compiled the pwc-10.0.9-rc1 module and installed it and everything worked as it used to do, except i now have to use the nodga flag with xawtv, because the latest nvidia driver doesn't support dga. I don't even know what dga is or does, so i don't care. Thanks Solar^ for your time and help, Chris Maaskant -- To reply via E-mail remove NOSPAMPLEASE
