From: genericaudioperson on 3 Oct 2005 21:52 it depends on what you call jazz, and what you define as dead. the big shift happened when Elvis-style rockabilly/Buddy Holly became the rage. before that, the sound of big band horn arrangements was the popular sound whether it was a pure jazz thing or a pop thing. then the small three piece band with an electric guitar and a young vocalist took over. then everything else happened. so 1954 would be a good death year if you wanted to try to be specific.
From: genericaudioperson on 3 Oct 2005 22:07 the pinnacle year for jazz..again another vague concept. if you mean in terms of popularity, then it would have to be when the sound of jazz was in fact the sound of popular music. this would mean Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra. So 1927 to 1952 would be fair as a rough figure. If you mean when was the best playing, well it's tough to beat the be-bob/cool jazz virtuoso era of the 1960s with John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Philly Joe Jones, Charles Mingus, etc. The most skilled ever is John Coltrane. He was a genius at the right place and time and practiced all day long every day. Buddy Rich would have to be included in the "best ever" category as well, but on drums. On vocals, Ella Fitzgerald.
