REAL rap or the last decade or so's lame descendant?

Gill Scott Heron first showed up sometime around the late 60's...
There's no comparison.

The year Monk retired? The year Mingus died? Coltrane? We do seem to be
living in times rather thin on musical geniuses, sadly.

I suspect it's more a matter of living in times when musical genius is
not a highly marketable commodity. Labels want music that can be labelled.

Why don't we rethink the question? There's plenty of good jazz being made
(and some of it s even being recorded & offered for sale - go figure).
Hell, Bluegrass is even seeing somewhat of a resurgence (again), and it's
been dead buried several times in my short (45 year) lifetime.

When was the most really good jazz embraced by the powers that run the
major record companies? Late 1950's - early 1960's.

When was the last time really good recently recorded jazz was relatively
easy to find in a typical record store for anyone who was actually looking
for it? Probably late 1970's

If you know where to look, there's still some really good live jazz
happening in most reasonably sized cities. Some of it is even getting
recorded. Don't expect to see it in your local Border's or Barnes &
Noble's.
